Holding Hope
“Here for it” Sophomore Exhibition
Born into a post 9/11 world, I, like many others, missed out on the end of our senior year. We graduated during a global pandemic. Then we began college on zoom amidst the chaos of an election and climate crises galore. My piece attempts to capture the feelings and experiences we have all suffered these past couple years, it is a reflection of the sociopolitical struggles overwhelming us, from the Black Lives Matter movement to the insurrection. I wanted to capture what it feels like to live in a world on fire, both literally and figuratively, I wanted it to be real and raw. Which is why I used actual headlines from the past two years to create a collage that the viewer is unable to take in all at once, it is meant to be overwhelming and messy. Not all of the headlines are visible, yet every single one was carefully chosen, they denote the underlying sociopolitical themes of what is has meant to be present, to be here for it. The pandemic has been the largest global devastation of my generation, as art imitates life, the black mask is my way of showing the most impactful theme of all: Covid. The iris is the flower representing hope, ever growing through the chaos it symbolizes our resilience and progress as a community despite these challenges. My work is a self portrait, it is my therapeutic way of reflecting, but it is also supposed to mirror you, my viewer. The goal of this piece is to make you confront your challenges, to mourn 2020, to acknowledge how much you have grown since and find a calm hope within that, because you have been here for it all.
